What if one small daily habit could improve your mood, boost your brain health, reduce your stress, and even help you live longer?
It turns out, it can. And that habit is regularly engaging with art and visual culture.

Art Daily: Feel Better, Live Longer
A landmark study published in The British Medical Journal (BMJ) followed 6,710 adults over the age of 50 for 14 years. The researchers found that those who engaged with the arts regularly—through visits to museums, art exhibitions, concerts, or theater—were 31% less likely to die during the follow-up period than those who rarely or never engaged. That’s the kind of impact that could translate into as much as 10 extra years of life.
Crucially, the protective effect was found across income groups, and it was independent of education, physical health, and social factors. This means it wasn’t just the wealthy who were living longer due to better healthcare or lifestyle—it was the cultural activity itself that was making a difference.
Why daily exposure matters more than occasional visits
The BMJ study emphasized the value of repeated engagement. Researchers concluded that the frequency of participation played a key role, with more regular involvement leading to greater health benefits. While going to a museum once a year is wonderful, it’s the ongoing connection with visual culture that activates the long-term effects.
Supporting this, neuroscience is increasingly showing how daily aesthetic experiences physically impact the brain. In Your Brain on Art, Ivy Ross and Susan Magsamen explain how regular exposure to visuals—whether through color, composition, or narrative activates neural networks responsible for empathy, emotional regulation, memory, and cognitive clarity.
Another relevant insight comes from a 2020 study in Frontiers in Psychology, which found that even brief exposure to visual art can induce measurable physiological and emotional responses, such as lower cortisol levels and increased feelings of joy or calm.
And in healthcare settings, decades of research confirm that viewing nature scenes or calming imagery can reduce recovery time, improve sleep, and lower anxiety. That’s not just theory—it’s now being put into practice in hospitals, waiting rooms, and mental health programs.
“Reading Your Brain on Art was eye-opening. It made me realize that living with art isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about health, humanity, and future-thinking. I recommend it to everyone.”
